New Route Opens to Chengdu: What Does Turkish Airlines' Chinese Expansion Mean for Hungarian Travelers?
Starting November 11, 2026, Turkish Airlines will launch direct flights between Istanbul and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, opening a new gateway to Western China for those traveling from Budapest with a single transfer in Istanbul. Bookings are already open for the three weekly flights, and between August 17 and 21, the airline announced a Chinese campaign including Budapest as one of the departure cities. This development may be particularly important for those wishing to visit Sichuan province, the cultural and gastronomic offerings of Chengdu, or other destinations in the region.
However, the practical value of this news can only be fully understood if three things are distinguished. There is no direct Budapest–Chengdu flight: the new long-haul segment operates from Istanbul. The flight arrives at Tianfu Airport, code TFU, not the city's older Shuangliu Airport, CTU. Finally, the current Chinese visa exemption for Hungarian citizens is certified until the end of 2026; anyone booking for 2027 must re-verify the entry requirements before departure.
What Changes from November?
According to the published schedule, Turkish Airlines will fly from Istanbul to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport three times a week starting November 11. Flight TK226 from Istanbul operates on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, while the return flight TK227 departs from Chengdu on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The planned aircraft type is the Boeing 787-9. Schedule data may change before the start of operations, so the time listed on the ticket and the airline's app is always the authoritative source for specific bookings.
Chengdu will thus become Turkish Airlines' fourth mainland Chinese destination after Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. This expansion is not just another point on the map. Within Istanbul's vast transfer network, the Budapest feeder flight and the new Chinese segment can be combined in a single booking, which may offer a simpler travel chain than piecing together two separate tickets.
From the perspective of a Hungarian traveler, this means that starting from Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, one can reach Chengdu via Istanbul. The transfer takes place at the large Istanbul airport, and the arrival point is Chengdu Tianfu Airport. Before booking, it is advisable to check if both segments are on the same ticket, the transfer time, and whether checked baggage is tagged through to the final destination.
Budapest is Part of the Newly Announced Chinese Campaign
The official Turkish Airlines offer page lists a ticket purchase period between August 17 and 21, with a travel period from November 11, 2026, to March 27, 2027. Budapest is among the listed departure cities, and the Chinese destinations are Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu.
This coincides with the launch of the new Chengdu route, but the promotion does not mean that discounted seats are automatically available for all dates or all Budapest connections. Ticket prices, availability of booking classes, and connection lengths may vary by flight. According to official terms, the offer is not valid for AJet flights, codeshare segments, or flights operated by Star Alliance partners. Therefore, it is not enough to look at the total price: one must also check which airline actually operates each segment of the selected route.
When comparing prices, the total travel cost is key. This may include checked baggage, seat selection, meals during longer transfers, potential accommodation, and transport between Tianfu Airport and Chengdu accommodation. A lower base price with a very long connection is not necessarily a better choice, especially for shorter vacations.
Why is Chengdu Interesting for Hungarian Tourists?
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and one of Western China's most important economic, cultural, and transport hubs. The city's international fame comes partly from giant pandas, partly from Sichuan cuisine, and partly from the region's historical heritage. For a European traveler, the city can offer a multi-day program as a standalone destination, while also serving as a starting point for other parts of the province.
The panda research and breeding center is the primary destination for many visitors, but Chengdu's character is equally defined by its teahouses, local parks, traditional city districts, and spicy Sichuan dishes. The nearby Leshan Giant Buddha statue and Mount Emei are also frequently included in itineraries planned for the region. These require separate transport and sufficient time; arriving in Chengdu does not mean that all attractions are quickly accessible from the airport.
The name of Tianfu Airport is particularly important for planning. Chengdu has two major passenger airports: Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU). The new Turkish Airlines flight operates to TFU. If someone books a domestic connection, a separately purchased ticket, a hotel transfer, or a car, they should always check the IATA code. Confusing the two airports can easily lead to missed connections and significant additional costs.
Visa Exemption: Yes for 2026, Still to be Verified for 2027
According to official information from the Chinese government, Hungarian citizens with a valid ordinary passport may enter China without a visa for up to 30 days until December 31, 2026, for purposes of tourism, business, family or friend visits, exchange programs, or transit. This facilitation is directly relevant for November and December travels.
However, the 30-day visa exemption is not a general work or study permit and does not replace the appropriate visa if the purpose or duration of the trip falls outside the listed categories. Passport validity, the actual purpose of the trip, onward or return travel documents, and accommodation details may be checked by border control authorities. Visa exemption does not guarantee automatic entry.
It is particularly important that the ticket promotion travel period lasts until March 27, 2027, while the currently officially confirmed Hungarian visa exemption is valid until December 31, 2026. Those purchasing tickets for January, February, or March should not automatically assume the rule will be extended. Check the current information from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Chinese immigration authorities, and the Chinese diplomatic mission in Budapest before booking and as departure approaches.
One Ticket or Separate Bookings?
For the Budapest–Istanbul–Chengdu route, a single booking generally provides greater protection in case of schedule changes or missed connections. If the passenger travels under the same contract with a confirmed connection, the operating airline must handle the connection break according to the relevant terms. With two separate tickets, the provider of the second flight typically is not responsible if the passenger does not arrive on time due to a delay of the first flight.
If separate bookings are made due to a better price, it is advisable to plan for a large time buffer, a night in Istanbul if necessary, and insurance whose terms truly cover missed connections with separate tickets. The name of the insurance alone is not enough: exclusions, deductibles, and documentation requirements must also be read.
During the Istanbul transfer, it must be checked whether entry into Turkey is required. With through-checked baggage and a single booking, this is often not necessary, but the situation may change with separate tickets, baggage collection, or overnight accommodation. The current regulations of the airline and Turkish authorities are always authoritative for the specific route.
Practical Checklist Before Booking
- Check that the arrival airport is indeed Chengdu Tianfu, TFU.
- Check if the Budapest–Istanbul and Istanbul–Chengdu segments are on one ticket.
- Compare the total travel time, not just the base price.
- Read which flights and booking classes the promotion applies to.
- Check baggage through-tagging and transfer times in both directions.
- For 2027 travel, separately verify the Chinese visa rules for Hungarian passports.
- Book flexible accommodation and onward travel until the new flight schedule stabilizes.
What Does This Mean for the Market?
The Chengdu flight demonstrates the expansion of Turkish Airlines' Chinese presence and strengthens Istanbul's role as a transfer hub between Europe and Asia. For Hungary, this has tangible benefit if the Budapest feeder flights connect properly to the three weekly Far East departures, the pricing is competitive, and the routes offered on a single ticket provide sufficient protection.
The new connection does not make Chengdu a direct Budapest destination, yet it can reduce the complexity of itinerary planning. For Hungarian travelers, the greatest advantage may be that a new Chinese metropolis becomes accessible via a single, well-known European-Asian hub. The most important point of caution is the date: the November flight launch and the August sales campaign are fresh opportunities, but the 2027 visa conditions should not yet be treated as a settled fact.
