Starting May 2027, a direct air connection may link the New York area with Ljubljana: United Airlines plans four flights per week between Newark and the Slovenian capital's airport. The route, announced on August 25, 2026, is not a Budapest flight, yet it represents a significant change in the Hungarian and Central European travel market. A country neighboring Hungary is receiving a new, non-stop American connection, which could create new options for those heading to the United States and direct more American visitors to the region. However, the schedule is for 2027 and the flight is subject to regulatory approval, so travelers should check current conditions before and after booking.

What Changes in May 2027?

According to the official United Airlines announcement, the flight between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) may start on May 12, 2027. The airline plans four round-trip connections per week using Boeing 767-400ER wide-body aircraft. Tickets went on sale on the day of the announcement; however, the company indicates for all its new international routes that their launch depends on government and regulatory approval.

The new Ljubljana flight is part of a 2027 network expansion covering ten new international destinations. From Newark, United plans new flights to Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Olbia, and Catania, among others; from Washington, Toulouse will be added to the network, and from San Francisco, Okinawa. For seasonal flights, it is especially important to check whether the direct flight also operates on the return date.

Overall, the Newark–Ljubljana flight is an important Central European tourism development, as it brings a direct American connection close to Hungary and can strengthen the region's international visibility. For Hungarian travelers, this is a new option, not automatically a better solution. The best choice will be determined by a combined examination of the departure location, the total cost of the trip, the risk of bookings consisting of one or more tickets, and the US entry rules valid in 2027.
