More Transparent Green Fuel May Come to Aviation: What Does the New IATA and ICAO Agreement Mean for Travelers?

On June 2, during the ICAO Aviation Climate Week in Montreal, IATA and ICAO announced a new collaboration for more transparent tracking of sustainable aviation fuels, or SAF. At first glance, the news may seem like an industry technical detail, but in reality, it is directly related to how the green transition of aviation will be more measurable, how airlines' climate commitments can be verified, and in the long term, in what cost and regulatory environment Hungarian travelers will fly.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the UN's specialized aviation agency, ICAO, did not announce a new fuel or an immediate discount for passengers. The essence of the current agreement is rather that the data, records, and reporting systems related to SAF show more reliably how much sustainable fuel is entering aviation, where it is used, and what emission reductions can be accounted for. This is important because claims about green aviation only mean something if they are backed by verifiable, uniform, and internationally comparable data.

The news is particularly timely because European passengers are already encountering the issue of sustainable aviation fuel not as a theoretical future. According to the EU ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, from 2025, the proportion of SAF mixed into traditional kerosene must be gradually increased at EU airports: starting at a minimum of 2%, 6% by 2030, and the goal is 70% by 2050. What exactly happened now?

The chain of production, delivery, mixing, accounting, and use passes through several actors: fuel producers, distributors, airports, airlines, and authorities. Why is this important for flights departing from the EU?

In the short term, it is not expected that a passenger will see a separate line on the ticket for the cost of the sustainable fuel proportion, but airlines' cost structures and pricing may feel it in the longer term. Second, more transparent accounting can help in choosing routes and providers based on more reliable emission data for corporate travel, conferences, or government institutional trips.

Third, more uniform records can be important for those traveling through multiple airports. A Hungarian family, for example, might depart from Budapest, transfer in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Istanbul, and then continue on a long-haul flight. For the passenger, the question is simple: how sustainable is the given route, and how reliable is the data received about it? The answer can only be meaningful if industry data collection is not fragmented.

Will flight tickets become more expensive because of this?

The current IATA-ICAO announcement alone does not mean an immediate price increase. It is not about a new tax, a new ticket fee, or a surcharge directly imposed on passengers. However, SAF is currently more expensive than traditional kerosene, and the increase in European mixing ratios may lead to cost impacts over time. Therefore, travelers should treat this topic not as an isolated green news item, but as one of the factors of the aviation price environment in the coming years.

The other side is also important. From the passenger's side, the practical advice today is still not to look for separate SAF flights. Rather, when planning summer and autumn trips, keep an eye on the total travel cost: flight tickets, luggage, transfer risks, airport transport, accommodation, and flexibility terms all count together. What does this mean for the Hungarian tourism market?

If the green transition of aviation in Europe becomes more authentic and comparable, it can affect the communication of destinations. A city or tourism provider will not only be able to say that it is easily accessible, but can also more accurately show what emission data are linked to the routes leading there.

This can be particularly important for corporate and MICE travel, where companies increasingly request sustainability data for business trips. For an international conference organizer, it may matter how Budapest appears compared to competitor cities in terms of aviation connections, airport services, and measurable travel footprint. SAF alone does not decide a venue choice, but reliable emission data can become part of the decision matrix.

Domestic tour operators and travel agencies should also follow the process. In the coming years, more customers will likely ask about the environmental impact of a flight-based tour, a city visit, or an overseas honeymoon. The good answer will not be simple reassurance, but a factual explanation: what regulation is in effect in the EU, what the SAF proportion means, what is already mandatory, and what is still a voluntary commitment or a long-term goal.

What should the traveler look for in the coming months?

News about SAF will become more common, so it is worth remembering a few basic principles. First: "sustainable fuel" is not equal to emission-free flying. Second: the value of claims is given by the methodology, registry, and verification behind them. Third: EU regulation has already started, but the proportions increase gradually, so the real impact will become visible over years.

  • If you see an airline sustainability claim, look for whether it refers to specific fuel use, emission data, or just a general commitment.
  • If you organize a corporate trip, request comparable emission data for routes, not just a price list.
  • If you are price-sensitive, expect that fuel and regulatory costs will remain part of the background of flight ticket prices in the coming years.
  • If you depart from Budapest, plan the full airport logistics along with the flight ticket, such as transport before departure, waiting time, or if necessary, car rental at Budapest airport.

The new IATA-ICAO SAF collaboration is not a flashy passenger-side change, but a foundational step. Still, it is important because the credibility of green aviation depends not on well-sounding campaigns, but on measurable, verifiable, and internationally coordinated data. If sustainable aviation fuel is truly to be one of the main tools of aviation's climate transition, then passengers, companies, airports, and regulators must know what they are accounting for and why.

For Hungarian travelers, what is visible today is that EU aviation is slowly but surely entering a new era: alongside ticket price, route, comfort, and reliability, accountable environmental performance is playing an increasingly larger role. Those planning summer or autumn trips now do not need to postpone their booking because of this, but it is worth paying more conscious attention to the overall travel picture. SAF is not a magic solution, but an expensive, complex, and regulation-intensive transitional tool. That is precisely why IATA and ICAO have now put transparency and data quality at the center.
